Chookrun Kiosk, Byron, NSW, 2015
In this project, the existing Cafe housed in an historical light keeper’s outbuilding has been retrofitted to open out onto the new sheltered deck platform.
Exploring Cape Byron Light-house’s historical past led to the design and locating of this cantilevered sheltered deck. The lighthouse keeper’s old chookrun site was offered the most spectacular sighting. The deck cantilevers in the direction of Julian Rocks while the roof twisted up towards the lighthouse.
For the site to remain open to visitors the structure was fabricated off site, and assembled safely yet quickly. This was achieved by using a pre welded bolt together frame, craned into place.
The very exposed coastal location meant that there was a keen focus on durability and minimal maintenance.
