HOME SWEET HOME
Troppo have worked on over 1,000 residential projects, from bathroom and verandah additions through to humble shacks to urban dwellings. Large or small, all seek to keep their footprint to the least, trading more expensive indoor and conditioned space for more economic and fun outdoor space – courts, decks, verandahs, breezeways.
Often projects are staged within a site master plan.
We work with the whole site (and its context beyond). We are not about architecture as ‘object’. We do not plonk a house on a site – we ‘carve’ it from the site, working ‘in section’, in the vertical dimension, to consider the connection between indoor and outdoor space, between ground and sky – and always with due regard for neighbouring conditions and the wider setting.
Each Troppo house, or rework of an existing dwelling, seeks to extend its occupants’ empathy with the site and its very particular environment.
Each piece of residential work reflects the ambitions, stories, and, yes, the nuanced functional needs of its users.
Troppo houses have occupied page 1 of the Phaidon Atlas of World Architecture in its 2 recent editions (2004, 2008); and our residential work, big and small, is widely and highly awarded.
